The new big thing.. is small
Yep, It is well equipped small apartments! Yes Small is cool. We might even enter the next small is cool contest! Trained in interior design I am continually fascinated by lifestyle and the challenge of making living in a small space largely possible. It just seems like a logical route, but one that can be a challenge to tackle- which just makes me more determined to find cool solutions! I may still be known in my hometown as the kid who lived in a caravan- after my flat mate lost her job and I couldn’t keep up the two room rent (and council tax) for the both of us- or I could have, but once having paid the bills and bought food had nothing left over. I sought inspiration holding firm to my strong beliefs in not doing x because that’s what everyone else does, and having always been fascinated by alternative living styles. It was, dare I say it, ..fun. I still paid a small rent when I lived in the ‘musketeer’ but had enough to go gallivanting more than I’d ever before- every other weekend I was away someplace.. visiting friends in England, trip’s to Oslo.. I didn’t have to worry about money, and it was nice to be able to share more of what I had! These trips led to so many good things including the eventual meeting of my husband!
Yes caravans are cool again too- check out about that here.
As the founder from apartment therapy puts it “This is about proving that you can overcome obstacles like square footage and rent.” read his story here
But to me it is also to have (me or my loved ones) not sacrifice all our life, energy and time to an thankless workforce to the point of having nothing else but a six-room house, and to find a place of happiness with what we have now, than always wanting more. Seriously some people will never be happy!
My father had a good job running a business from over sees in Britain, we moved into a large home and it wasn’t all it was made out to be.. we had a big house and security but the money went on the big house and there wasn’t much left over.. for you know.. ‘living’ I wouldn’t want for either of my parents to have worked more, (I know they have worked hard) as kids we wanted and often needed them around. There were things that we went without but I developed skills and talents that I otherwise may never have. I learned resourcefulness and gratitude and to this day can always find something to amuse myself without it costing a fortune, I don’t need ‘things’ to make me happy and also as a result I have never had any debt problems. Its really not so bad is it!? Like everything there are ups and downs to it.
Be happy and have fun finding creative solutions that fit your life. Speaking of which I LOVE this blog.
