Water works for 69
Saturday when I got home to Copenhagen I was surprised to hear what had been going on just around the corner of where we live. Niels had told me that there had been police cars parked outside our house for a while earlier and that there had been a demonstration, that turned into a riot and the police had used tear gas to break things up. I was even more surprised to see the pictures, the treatment from the police appears pretty brutal. I understand that the authorities are taking a no tolerance approach.. 436 people were arrested, that is the largest no. of people arrested in one single event in the history of Denmark. The hopeful destination for those previously occupying the building at 69 was an old building further out town, a vacant waterworks plant which they hoped to use for concerts and parties (Icelandic Bjork and some other big names have played at their old venue) they managed to successfully occupy the hoped for new premises for about 20 min.

Interesting. I’m not sure how I really feel about protests. If they work out peacefully that’s fine but if they’re causing chaos and endangering lives then obviously it’s not good. The police don’t just crack out the tear gas for nothing… Here there’s been a lot of immigration protests where people don’t even understand what they’re out protesting about. Oh well.
